DC-Harrisonburg 400 Loop
Don’t want to figure out one-way transportation from DC or Damascus? Consider the 400 mile LOOP option starting in Washington, DC. The ride progresses from flatter rail trails leaving the capital to cross the Blue Ridge and Shenandoah River, following the western edge of the Shenandoah Valley along the George Washington National Forest to Harrisonburg. From Harrisonburg, the route heads east over Massanutten Mountain ($10 trail day pass required), and then returns through Fort Valley, Loudoun County and the Washington & Old Dominion Rail Trail.
The first half is a section of the Valley 535 route and identical to the DC-Hburg 215 route, which continues another 330 miles, to Damascus, VA. Unpaved sections of this route follow the C&O Canal Rail Trail, state-maintained gravel roads and a section of smooth National Forest dirt roads near Wolf Gap and Cub Run on Massanutten. Good for 32-40mm tires.
